Six degrees of separation is the theory that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world, so that a chain of “a friend of a friend” statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps.
How many times have you been on Facebook and realized that you share mutual friends with people you had no idea knew each other?
Have you gotten goosebumps while on LinkedIn realizing that you are within three degrees of the most influential professionals in your field?
You are not alone! The larger my sphere of influence grows the more I’m convinced that we are within six degrees of our destinies. For some, that’s a dream job, a record-breaking sale or even a soul mate.
One of my favorite quotes from Doc Searls says “When we learn something from each other, were formed by the experience….we are authors of each other.” When we see ourselves as an invaluable part of a whole, we can begin to understand the importance of our individual degree. The end goal is to share our talents and gifts with others so they may do the same.
